Stepping Out is an interactive musical artwork commissioned by Southbank to celebrate their 75th Anniversary, which will be enjoyed by people walking up and down the two staircase sections, as well as on the central landing area.

Luke is working with composer Dan Jones and orchestral musicians of the National Theatre, to create bespoke music for this new artwork. Speakers will be mounted on each staircase to play rising and falling arpeggios of music triggered by members of the public as they walk up and down the steps.  Round ‘islands’ of colour will also be installed outside the festival hall, allowing the public to trigger music as they hop from one island to the next. Programmed to change each week, commuters passing through the space will enjoy interacting with this ever changing artwork!

The installation will be presented 10 June to 30 September 2026.
