Stepping Out

Stepping Out is an interactive musical artwork commissioned by Southbank Centre to celebrate their 75th Anniversary, which can be enjoyed by people walking up and down the two staircase sections, as well as on the central landing area.

Luke has worked with composer Dan Jones and musicians of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, to create bespoke music for this new artwork. Speakers are mounted on each staircase to play rising and falling arpeggios of music triggered by members of the public as they walk up and down the steps. Round ‘islands’ of colour are also installed outside the festival hall, allowing the public to work together to trigger music and add instruments to the composition. Programmed to change each week, commuters passing through the space can enjoy interacting with this ever changing artwork!

Located here, Stepping Out is running 8am – 10pm each day until 30 September 2026.
