bacteria in the order&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alchetron.com\/Thiotrichales\">Thiotrichales<\/a>. They are named after the Italian medic and botanist&nbsp;<em>F.S. Beggiato<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"firstDescription\">The organisms live in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alchetron.com\/Sulfur\">sulfur<\/a>-rich environments. During his research in Anton de Bary\u2019s laboratory of botany in 1887, Russian botanist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alchetron.com\/Sergei-Winogradsky\">Sergei Winogradsky<\/a>&nbsp;found that&nbsp;<em>Beggiatoa<\/em>&nbsp;oxidized&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alchetron.com\/Hydrogen-sulfide\">hydrogen sulfide<\/a>&nbsp;(H<sub>2<\/sub>S) as an energy source, forming intracellular sulfur droplets. Winogradsky referred to this form of metabolism as inorgoxidation (oxidation of inorganic compounds).
