this&nbsp;Bacterium Yersinia Pestis sculpture for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museumhetvalkhof.nl\">Museum Het Valkhof<\/a>&#8216;s Plague exhibition in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Plague&nbsp;is an infectious disease caused by the Bacterium Yersinia Pestis. Symptoms include fever, weakness and headache. Usually this begins one to seven days after exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plague was the cause of the&nbsp;<a title=\"Black Death\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Death\">Black Death<\/a>&nbsp;that&nbsp;swept through Asia, Europe, and Africa&nbsp;in the 14th century and killed an estimated 50 million people.<sup id=\"cite_ref-WHO2014_1-19\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>&nbsp;This was about 25% to 60% of the European population.&nbsp;<sup id=\"cite_ref-WHO2014_1-20\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-CDC2012Hx_10-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Because the plague killed so many of the working population, wages rose due to the demand for labor.&nbsp;<sup id=\"cite_ref-CDC2012Hx_10-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>&nbsp;Some historians see this as a turning point in European economic development.<sup id=\"cite_ref-CDC2012Hx_10-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>&nbsp; The disease was also responsible for the&nbsp;<a title=\"Plague of Justinian\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plague_of_Justinian\">Plague of Justinian<\/a>, originating in the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Eastern Roman Empire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eastern_Roman_Empire\">Eastern Roman Empire<\/a>&nbsp;in the 6th century CE, as well as the&nbsp;<a title=\"Third plague pandemic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Third_plague_pandemic\">third epidemic<\/a>, affecting&nbsp;China,&nbsp;Mongolia, and&nbsp;India, originating in the&nbsp;Yunnan Province&nbsp;in 1855.
